► The Past
Edmund was born in the high arctic regions of Scandinavia, but not as the man he would become. He was the oldest son of a reindeer herder, and lived a semi-nomadic life with their very large extended family. As a member of the Sami people, he was raised in their indigenous culture, learning to hunt, fish and trap at an early age. He was quick to learn, and soon mastered the ways and the stories of his people. Once he reached adulthood, he was given his own herd to tend, and was very happy with his life.
When he was 19, he was awoken in the night by the frantic sounds of his herd. He quickly went out to check on his animals, only to find a wolf pack viciously attacking them. During his attempts to scare off the beasts, one of them bit his arm. Despite his injury, he managed to protect his livelihood. Even though he had been raised with the legends of wolves that could transform into men, he was completely oblivious that the festering wound on his forearm would change his life forever.
By the next moon cycle, it was clear that something was very wrong with him. Several days before the full moon, he became bed-ridden with a terrible fever. Seemingly on the verge of death, his family tried to make him as comfortable as possible. They left him to the Gods while they began a full-moon ritual, which was a common occurrence in his family. It was during this powerful music and chanting that Ed finally emerged from his tent. But it was not the man that they knew. Instead, he was a striking black beast, his maw snarling. He had been transformed into a werewolf.
He was driven away by his family with sword and with fire, chasing him far into the wilderness that night. By morning, he had changed back into a human; naked, cold and alone. Instead of returning to his kin, he decided to stay alone in the wilderness, contemplating his fate. He quickly learned that with a bit of concentration, he could transform into a great dark wolf at will. Realizing that this would be the only way to survive without tools or weapons, he remained in this form for a very long time. So long, in fact, that he had almost completely forgotten his human life, and his human name.
Eventually, he grew tired of living life as a wild animal. Too often was he stalked and hunted by humans, and it was too frequently that they almost had him. He returned to a human settlement, and managed to barter passage to a new world they called ‘America’. But without a name, he would not be able to board a ship. So he chose one at random; Edmund seemed fitting enough.
Completely forsaking his identity and culture, he left his homeland for this new world. He would eventually find himself in the Minnesota territory, where many others of Scandinavian descent were beginning to settle. It was during this time that he began to try and carve a new life for himself, learning the land and it’s flora and fauna as he went. He found it easy to adapt with the plethora of elk, deer, and caribou that dotted the landscape For many years, he kept to himself, constantly on the move and running from his feral nature. But no matter how much he tried, every full moon he would transform and ravage the world for a night.
After many years had passed, he was realizing that he was not aging like the rest of his counterparts. He had spent at least twenty years in Scandinavia before coming to the new world, at had been roaming the wilds of America for another fifteen. His people may have aged well, but it was impossible for a man of nearly 55 to still look like a very young man. He knew that he would eventually have to seek out another of his kind to explain his affliction.
In this search, he would eventually find himself in Minneapolis. This is where he would meet his future wife. She was a member of a small werewolf pack that had moved to the area, finding their previous hunting grounds in Illinois less than desirable now that humanity began to claim the land. Ed was soon welcomed into the pack, once he had proven his skills as a wolf and a warrior. He very quickly fell in love with Victoria, who was the daughter of the alpha wolf. She began to teach him the basics of werewolf culture and society, as well as help him with his very basic English vocabulary. She didn’t speak Sami, but her family had immigrated from Norway, and their languages had many similarities.
Their courtship lasted nearly seven years years. They were finally married in Since he could not remember his surname, Ed took the family name of his pack; Valkyrie. They would spend another several years with the Valkyrie pack of Minneapolis, before finally deciding that they needed a pack of their own. With little hunting ground to claim, Ed and Victoria left Minnesota and headed it west, eventually settling in the wilds of Montana.
It was here that in 1886, they had their first born son, Ryder. They doted on their only child, teaching and training him in every way possible until the day his wolf nature surfaced. Once their son reached the age of maturity, they had the twins Caleb and Conan. At the turn of the century, Ed was far too busy trying to defend their lands from the encroaching humans, both in the field and in human politics, to spend quality time with his new sons. Instead of doting on them and showing them affection like he had with Ryder, he began a strict training regiment. They would have to protect the family while he was away, and he refused to let them fail. Things seemed to be going well once they reached adulthood, but humanity never stopped coming. When all seemed lost in the battle to keep themselves and their land safe, Victoria put it into his head that they should return to the first city she had set eyes on; Chicago. She had heard of a group of other immortal races that had come together to create a city of peace and safety.
They eventually left in the 1930’s. They would live in relative safety through the first few decades, even with the several run-ins they would have with the resident pack. Once they were able to claim that they were the strongest and most reliable pack in the city, Ed and Victoria had another child, Ramona. Instead of the harsh childhood that their previous children had been privy to, they decided to raise her as a normal human until she was of age. Unfortunately, because of her parent’s busy lives as politicians, they spent very little time with the young wolf. Because of this lack of attention, the girl did not know of her nature until she was 16 years old. But once she discovered her abilities, she too joined the fold of The Court, and began living a secret life with the rest of them
During the late 80’s, Ed and his family were the target of a rather savage and merciless hunter. It was unknown where he had come from or why he chose the werewolves specifically, but he began to attack the citizens of The Court with almost wanton abandon. These attacks lasted nearly a decade, and never seemed to cease. Unable to keep his community safe, he finally sent Conan and Caleb after him. They tracked him for months, and were certain that they had him cornered and overpowered. But they were wrong. They handedly lost the fight, and Conan was sent home on a body bag.
His wife was inconsolable. She and Ed able to remain in the city for a time, but his constant work with The Court and High Council kept him away from his wife for too many hours a day. She couldn’t stand the loneliness and the reminder that her son was lost to her in the hell hole of the city Chicago was, so she moved back north to Minneapolis to live with her family.
Ed tried his best to survive in the city without the love of his life. He spent nearly five years alone, giving everything he had to The Court of Miracles. But deep inside he knew that he couldn’t bear to be without Victoria. So, he handed over the reigns to his son Ryder, and rejoined his beloved in the north.
► The Present
Upon hearing news of his son’s troubles leading the pack, and his political problems within The Court, Ed could no longer remain in Minnesota. While he had only planned on a brief visit to speak with his children, he has realized that he is desperately needed in Chicago. With the recent attack on his daughter, he is certain that the same killer that took his son from him is back on the loose, and refuses to go back north until his family is either safe in the city, or safe with him on a return trip.
